Tourists of Zagreb: Neighbors Visiting Advent

Advent in Zagreb was named the best European Advent market for three years in a row. But, our neighbors knew the secret a little longer. This month, we have talked with Maša from Ljubljana, who visited Zagreb and gave us her impressions.
To start with, tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Maša and I'm 23 years old. I am Slovenian and I study at the Faculty of Education in Ljubljana, where I also live. I have visited Zagreb with my boyfriend for a short weekend trip.

Why did you choose Zagreb as your destination?

Zagreb was always dear to me. I can't point out exactly why, but it has something special. This was my third time in Zagreb. It is close to Ljubljana, and I visited the Advent market for the first time a few years ago when we visited for a Medevščak hockey game.

For how long did you stay in the city?

We stayed only for a day. As I said, it is close to Ljubljana, and we had to work the next day, so we drove in the morning and came back home in the evening.

What were your impressions of the city?

I actually fell in love with it. There are so many things to see, and whatever direction you take, you can explore new places in the city.

Can you compare Zagreb Advent to Ljubljana? What are the differences and similarities between the two?

I don't think I can even compare it to the Ljubljana Advent. Zagreb has so much to offer. All the different locations are special and worth visiting. In Ljubljana, everything is located in the strict city center, and there isn't so much going on there. My favorite thing about Zagreb Advent is that it has its special theme and a different storyline every year. You can really feel the Christmas magic in the city, and there aren't only a few lodges with mulled wine, but so much more. And another great thing is that wherever you decide to pose for a picture, it makes a perfect background for Instagram. :)

Which locations did you visit during your stay?

We visited everything: Ban Jelacic Square, Zrinjevac Park, Fuliranje, European Square. We also visited the Advent in Tunnel, the Ice Park, and much more. I'm sure I forgot to mention all the places. My favorite was the Tunnel. It felt like the Nutcracker fairy tale came to life. I adore the Nutcracker, so it was absolutely stunning to see all the decorations put in the Tunnel. And I almost forgot to mention. We visited Cafe Finjak which is for sure the most beautiful cafe I have ever seen.

Have you tried any food and drinks from Advent lodges?

Yes. We tried out famous fritule and they were great.

How did you like these years' theme in decorations?

As I mentioned before, I adore the Nutcracker. In fact, I danced ballet for ten years, and that was my favorite ballet. I took a picture with at least ten Nutcracker figures placed across the city. :) I love it how there is a theme and a story for the whole Advent.

Are you coming back to Zagreb Advent?

For sure! We will probably visit it one more time this year. :)
