Črnomerec Stream
Down the slopes of Medvednica mountain, several streams descend to the city. Each has its own characteristics that make it special, and although miles and miles away from the sea, one of them is, believe it or not, salty. On this occasion, we will walk along the Črnomerec stream, listen to its murmuring and explore this part of town.
Location
The most part of the stream passes through the namesake neighbourhood Črnomerac in the western part of the city. Some parts of the stream are above the surface, some are underground, and some parts are under different names. This is the only stream which has found its way to the Sava River and flows into it. It emerges as the Great stream below mountain lodge called Grafičar and runs down the Medvednica slopes to Lukšić area, then continues through Črnomerec to Ilica and the factory area of Pliva. Then it flows along Fallerovo promenade, a short underground stream at depots and again above the surface between the middle and Gajevo settlement until Gredice and flows into Vrapčak which ends in the Sava River. Made for walks and relaxation, Črnomerec stream in some parts has very nice small waterfalls and cascades, and some the prettiest parts for relaxing strolls are between Zagorska street and tram terminal Remiza and the southern end, near Gredice. Apart from walking, you can also have a picnic in some areas, and even dip your feet and find some refreshment in the summer.

Explore it and find a treasure
While walking along the stream, there is a chance you find a treasure – it is one of 900 Geocache spots across the city. Geocaching is a fun and innovating way to explore new places, it is an adventurous game that will take you to some amazing places - this is just one of them. (To find out more about it go to one of our previous posts!)
Besides the stream
Can you imagine even more natural beauty in the middle of the city? Close to the stream, there is a forest park called Grmošćica. So, if the stream and surrounding nature are not enough for you, go into the woods. If you reach the western end of the forest you will be awarded a unique and breathtaking view of the city. The city view from the lookout point at the edge of the forest is the most beautiful at the end of the day when the glass surfaces of buildings in the distance reflect the evening sun. Really dreamy experience!
Another unusual and fun attraction to explore in the area close to the Črnomerec stream is an old overpass that was once used by a brick factory, and today has the potential to become a unique promenade such as New York's High Line Park in Manhattan or Parisian green promenade. Take a walk through it now, while it is still completely "under the radar" and mostly empty with no one around!
One more sight to see is Rudolph's military base. It is a big 19th century historical building complex that is now a cultural site and protected for that purpose. Rudolph was a prince and apparently a great lover with interesting life which even inspired some movies. Intriguing, right?
Adventurous and romantic at the same time
This part of the city is a hidden gem, often overlooked even by local people that take it for granted. Don’t make the same mistake - step away a bit from the city centre and organise yourself and preferably a loved one, have not so ordinary and potentially adventurous and romantic getaway and spend a nice day completely for free.
