Laniste – How This Neighbourhood at the End of the City Became One of the Most Popular Neighbourhoods

Looking for ideas what to see, what to do or where to eat in this urban neighbourhood? We’ve got you covered.

One of the youngest neighbourhoods in Zagreb is Laniste, located in western part of New Zagreb next to river Sava. This part of Zagreb was nearly forgotten for many years because it wasn’t in the city plans to populate this area. But as Zagreb grew, more and more people wanted to live there because of its life quality, cultural facilities, historical identity and job opportunities. With all that in mind, it was only logical to look for new spaces in the city where people could build their homes or buy apartments.

The part of town that we now call Laniste is full of green open spaces, and it was perfect for this purpose, especially for young families that were looking for an urban neighbourhood away from city centre, but with everything they need within a reasonable reach. Laniste gives them just that – schools, kindergartens, shopping centres, parks, sports facilities, post office. Everything you need for a  normal life.

The major expansion of Laniste occurred when sports hall, Arena Zagreb, was built in 2008 for the purpose of hosting 21st Handball World Championship. Since it has quite memorable and specific architectural look, it has become one of the official city symbols. Due to its functionality, capacity and technical-equipment, Arena is a vital asset not only to this neighbourhood or Zagreb but whole Croatia. Aside from sports events that can be organised here, many musicians are happy to hold concerts there which proves just how important it was to invest into such an urban facility. Arena is famous for many world-renowned musicians who entertained their fans from large stages inside Arena, but also for unforgettable parties hosted by Ultra for New Year’s Eve and ice skating spectacles organised by Disney.

Still, Arena Zagreb isn’t the only interesting thing this new and attractive neighbourhood has to offer. Here are some tips on what to see, what to do and where to eat if you ever find yourself nearby Laniste.

What to see

Well, first and foremost, if you haven’t realised by now, Arena Zagreb. If you’re a sports fan or a music junkie, there’s a great possibility you’ll find something for yourself there because Arena hosts similar events all the time. But other than that, I recommend taking a walk around the neighbourhood and strolling around beautiful new buildings. You’ll notice that entire area echoes with children’s laughter and joyous games they play because, believe it or not, Laniste is old-school when it comes to raising their youngsters. Buildings might be brand new, but parents like it the old way - letting their kids take their games outside and spending hours with their peers running, playing hide and seek, dodgeball, teaching their pets new tricks in the park or simply enjoying taking turns on a playground slide.

Also, people living there take time to take care of themselves, so you’ll find someone jogging at any time of the day. Luckily, river bank is just across the avenue so if you want to join them jogging, why not do it by the Sava and getting your cardio going while admiring green and picturesque nature?

What to do

The most modern shopping centre in south-western part of Zagreb is located right next to Arena Zagreb sports hall, and it’s called – wait for it – Arena Centar. Mind-blowing, I know. But the locals consider these two Arenas sister buildings because you can’t imagine one without the other. Ever since we learned there would be Arena hall, we also heard from the media that the biggest shopping centre in Zagreb would be built right next to it, so it’s impossible to imagine life without one of them.

Arena shopping centre offers all kinds of stores, whether you’re into fashion, beauty trends, shoes, bags, technology or if you’re only looking for something to fill your afternoon with. Then there’s IMAX movie theatre, casino for those who feel more daring and want to try out their luck, various restaurants for hungry ones and children’s playrooms where they can jump on inflatable castles and meet new friends while you’re enjoying your coffee nearby.

Where to eat

Ah yes, my favourite topic - food! Here’s the thing: whatever you’re into (Mexican food, Chinese, Italian, traditional Croatian dishes), everything is available in this area. Laniste is truly blessed with many restaurants where you can treat your appetite to all kinds of divine wonders served on a plate. For example, pizzeria Fianona became popular among Zagrebians from all parts of town because people heard from their friends what great food they serve there and, obviously, everyone wanted to try for themselves. Besides fantastic meals, their whole ambient is wonderful since they combine rustic elements with modern design ideas in their interior and you feel like you’ve entered another dimension while dining there.

Another personal favourite of mine is Old Wild West located inside of Arena Centre shopping mall. It is one of the top European chain restaurants in Europe which offers you cowboy-vibe through their very well-known beef steaks, delicious burgers which will make your mouth scream for more, tex-mex specialities for those who prefer spicy food, but also great desserts to sweeten up after that abundant meal.

On the other hand, you might prefer lighter food or are looking for vegetarian solutions. In that case, I recommend Living Room coffee shop that a friend of mine discovered not long ago. If you want a place that feels like a home away from home or if you're looking for that one special bar then Living Room will charm you from the very first step you make. They offer a variety of coffees from all around the world and unique tastes such as vanilla latte. For those who want to drink healthy and organic juices, bartenders will be more than happy to mix a few pieces of fruit and vegetables for you. If you’re a fitness junkie, then fear not because Living Room also has protein smoothies on their menu. After jogging by the Sava river or spending hours on shopping in Arena, this place will feel like a comforting oasis.
