The Lakes Of Maksimir

At the mention of the lake, many Zagrebians first think of one and only Jarun – the king of the clubbing scene. But this time we're looking for something more peaceful and quiet.

We already had an opportunity to cover the topic of park Maksimir, so if you haven't read it, we encourage you to do so. :) Maksimir is one of the most beautiful parts of Zagreb, containing our Maksimir stadium, a ZOO and the Maksimir forest also known as the lungs of the city.

Lakes of Maksimir are the pearls of the park. There used to be six of them, but today only five are accessible. The first lake you can find right next to the Maksimir street, it's about 3,3 m deep, and has two small islands. The second lake is the smallest one. On the third one, you can rent a boat and enjoy the lake first-hand. Half an hour of this romantic cruise (very movie like) will cost you just 20 kunas. The fourth lake is placed right next to Bliznec creek in Northeastern part of the Park. It has been dried out in period od 1975 to 2007, but is still accessible today. Along with the lake, the reconstruction has been done on Brezov's Cottage pavilion as well, which was previously destroyed in 1940s.

One of the fascinating facts is that the Maksimir lakes are home to many species, birds, fish, plants and... turtles.  The turtle species that has always been living here is Emys Orbicularis, but it got endangered in the most unexpected way. A household pet, Trachemys Scripta, also known as red-eared turtle has been released into the water (probably as a consequence of too many kids watching „Free Willy“ movie). And this adorable red-eared littly bully pushed away our domestic turtle almost completely. This is why you will be able to see both of these turtles swimming around, just don't let your pets free before doing some homework first – your turtle might be cute and snuggly to you but agressive toward another species. So keep that in mind.

Apart from the one near the ZOO, the rest of the lakes are rather peaceful and quite, which makes them fertile ground for a lot of activities going nearby.  It is especially fruitful for sports: at any time you can find some joggers running their paths, or cyclist circling the lakes. The old fishermen have always been around, although that is more of a social gathering or a relaxation therapy than an intensive sport. But if you are a fan of medieval times, you might be lucky to catch some LARP by the lakes. LARP is a live action role playing, which basically means 3D fantasy in which anyone can be a warrior. The weapons are secured so no one could really get hurt, and there are actual battles going on between opposite sides of enthusiasts.

The lakes are also perfect for an afternoon walk with families, especially with small children. It's a perfect getaway in nature, peace, and quiet. It is also a beautiful place to take some food, a blanket and take someone special for some fun and bonding over a picnic. The wildlife of the forest and lake will make sure to keep you company. :)

In conclusion, if you are looking for a place to connect with nature, to get away from the city noise, but don't want to go too far away, the Lakes are the perfect choice. If you want a safe place to take children, have some privacy for a date (don't miss renting the boat over the lake and enjoy movie-like romance) or if you're just looking for a place to get away from hustle and bustle of the city, come by and relax.

You won't be disappointed. :)
