Bringing Vintage Zagreb Winters to Life

The first snowfall came early this year! Zagreb woke up covered in a white layer of snow as early as November. Just in time, as the entire city prepares for Advent Zagreb. The Christmas festivities take place from 29 November to 7 January.

Will there be snow during that time? We can't tell, but we're sure longing for more magical snowy days. The winter scenery brought a sense of nostalgia. Why not dive straight into the winters of old by bringing some old photos to life? At the same time, the animated images make a lovely bucket list of the places in Zagreb that look best under the fluffy white cover.

Master your sledging skills at Cmrok

The first place to be after it snows is Cmrok - a perfect sledding spot. Every true Zagreber has broken their sled (and maybe earned some bruises) on a crazy downhill ride at Cmrok. If it's a nice day after a proper snowfall and you're wondering where everyone is - they're at Cmrok. Fun fact: Cmrok was the location of the first international ski competition in Zagreb.

Actually, not everyone is at Cmrok. Many head to Sljeme, the top of Mount Medvednica. The idyllic atmosphere of snow-covered trees makes the mountain above the city a must-visit after a proper snowfall. In fact, even if there's no snow in the city, you can sometimes see the white top of the mountain and opt for a day full of snow adventures instead of a stroll in the town. Fun fact: did you know that ski jumps used to be quite popular, and that there were three ski jump ramps on Mount Medvednica? That sport is wholly gone.

When you see the mountain covered in white, head on up!

Even if there's no snow, as long as the temperatures are close to zero (in Celsius), there will be ice, and with ice, there will be all sorts of winter sports. Skating, ice hockey - you name it, Zagrebers love it. If you're searching for locals' favourite sports skate rink, head to the neighbourhood of Šalata. Fun fact: did you know that Zagreb was the first place in the world where the judges of a skating competition used electronic boards instead of written notes to announce their marks?

Winter sports – beloved by Zagrebers!

Another popular snowy favourite is the gorgeous 18th-century park of Maksimir. Sledding, making snow angels, or simply enjoying the scenic winterscape all come together in Maksimir.

Maksimir is fairytaleish all year round

If you're not eager to leave the narrow city centre for the places that the locals rush to for the winter joys, and you still prefer discovering the old Upper town, beware - it could be slippery on your way up. It's worth it, though, as the views of the white rooftops are incredible.

Traffic can get interesting when it snows.

With all this talk about snowy Zagreb, we might get your hopes high. Don't worry, your hopes will easily reach those heights - Advent Zagreb and its magical atmosphere turn the city into a winter wonderland. With or without snow.

We rarely get this much snow these days.
